  • 1 lb ground beef Use ground beef with a bit of fat for flavor.
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce Light soy sauce for milder flavor or dark soy sauce for richer taste.
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Can be substituted with honey or coconut sugar.
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil Toasted sesame oil enhances flavor.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic is preferred.
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced Fresh ginger adds a bright note.
  • 1/2 cup green onions, sliced Can substitute with scallions.
  • Cooked rice for serving Jasmine, short-grain rice, brown rice, or quinoa can be used.
  • sesame seeds for garnish Toast lightly for best flavor.

Cooking

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the ground beef, breaking it apart as it cooks until browned with no pink left, approximately 5-7 minutes.
  • Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Stir in soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Cook for 2-3 minutes until sugar dissolves.
  • Let the mixture cook for another 3-5 minutes to thicken and deepen flavors.
  • Serve over warm rice, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

Enhance flavor with additional garlic and ginger. Experiment with heat by adding gochujang or chili oil. Taste as you go for personalized sweetness and saltiness.
